BREAST IMPLANT REMOVAL TECHNIQUE
Explant surgery is an outpatient procedure. Dr. Anton determines the best surgical technique for your individual needs relying on his years of plastic surgical experience. With a small incision (typically hidden in the inframammary fold), he extracts the implant and if appropriate the capsule. He may remove scar tissue as needed.
Depending on what you discussed during your consultation, he may also perform a breast lift, breast implant revision, or both. Some patients choose not to replace their implants. Most of our Newport Beach breast implant removal patients who choose to remove their implants or reduce the size of their implants will require a breast lift for a natural-looking and more youthful breast.

Your breast explant procedure begins with a private consultation where concerns such as breast asymmetry, breast sagging, or crepey breast skin are addressed. Dr. Anton will recommend which surgical technique best suits your goals.
This is your opportunity to ask questions about the procedure, express any concerns, and outline your desired outcomes. Your surgeon will provide a detailed explanation of the potential benefits, risks, and what you can expect before, during, and after the surgery. A Super Breast Lift or Nipple Areolar Lift may be recommended with your Implant Removal to achieve your aesthetic goals.
Prior to your surgery, you’ll receive detailed instructions to ensure you are fully prepared. This may include guidelines on pre-operative care, such as avoiding certain medications that can increase bleeding risk and arranging for someone to assist you after surgery. Most patients return home after surgery, but after care can be arranged at a local Newport Beach facility. Preparing your home environment to accommodate your post-operative recovery, including arranging a comfortable resting area and having necessary supplies on hand, will help facilitate a smoother recovery process.
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia at an outpatient facility to ensure your comfort throughout. Your surgeon will carefully place incisions in discreet locations to minimize visible scarring and remove the implants. If you choose to undergo a breast lift, the procedure involves making incisions around the nipple area, extending vertically down to the lower breast pole, and along the inframammary fold. This type of surgery is more complex and can take up to four and a half hours to complete.
BREAST IMPLANT REMOVAL RECOVERY
After breast implant removal surgery, you will be taken to a recovery area where you will be closely monitored by medical staff. Pain, swelling, and discomfort during the recovery period are easily managed with medication.
When you wake from surgery, you will be wearing a surgical support bra and are instructed to continue wearing it during the healing period. Swelling can be pronounced initially and subsides over a few weeks to months. Any bruising typically resolves in approximately two to four weeks.
Post-operative discomfort is likely to be mild to moderate. We offer prescribed medications to help control pain, but most patients find the implant removal surgery less painful than the initial implant placement. The recovery for implant removal follows a similar trajectory as your primary surgery.
Most patients return home from the surgical center the same day. It is possible to return to work in approximately one to two weeks depending on the physical demands of your job. Downtime may vary if you undergo a combination of procedures. The incision flattens and softens in a few weeks. The scar can take a year or more to fade.
Breast Lift patients may experience more tenderness because of the deep dermal lifting and tightening and be required to wear a support bra for an extended period as the breasts heal. Dr. Anton’s Super Breast Lift requires no post-operative drains, offering a significant benefit to a more convenient, comfortable, and safe recovery.
For the first two weeks, all patients are instructed to abstain from strenuous activity that raises heart rate or blood pressure:
- Exercise
- Sex
- Bending
- Heavy Lifting

- Smoking
Initial swelling and bruising should subside within 4-6 weeks, and any residual swelling in the deeper tissues should resolve by 6 months. You will be advised during your post-operative appointments about these restrictions. This healing process varies from patient to patient.
WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS?
Immediately after breast implant removal, you’ll notice an immediate reduction in breast volume, or enhanced volume if you’ve exchanged implants. However, swelling and bruising will obscure your result. If you choose to have a breast lift or implant exchange at the same time, these additional procedures will also impact your initial appearance. Over the next few weeks, as swelling subsides and your tissues heal, your breasts will gradually take on their new shape and size.
FINAL RESULTS
Full results, including any changes from a lift or new implants, can take several months to become fully visible as your body adjusts and settles. If you’ve undergone secondary breast augmentation surgery, it may take months for the silicone or saline breast implants to drop into the desired position.
