WHAT ARE NIPPLE LIFTS AND REVISIONS?

Nipple Lifts and Revisions are specialized cosmetic procedures designed to enhance the position and appearance of the nipple, often performed alongside Breast Augmentation and Breast Revision surgery. A Nipple Lift repositions the nipple to a higher, more youthful and balanced look.

There are various types of Nipple Lifts and Revisions depending on the patient’s concerns, anatomy, and desired surgical outcomes. This technique is ideal for those with sufficient breast volume to naturally fill the skin envelope, which is essential for achieving a successful lift. In cases where there is enough volume, a nipple lift can effectively raise the nipple by a minimal amount (up to 2.5cm depending on the procedure, providing a subtle enhancement without the need for extensive incisions or scarring. For patients without sufficient breast volume, adding a saline or silicone implant is necessary to fill out the skin envelope.

When performed in conjunction with Breast Augmentation or Breast Revision, a Nipple Lift allows patients to achieve a fuller, shapelier breast while improving nipple position for a cohesive, youthful appearance. For individuals undergoing breast revision surgery, such as an implant exchange or implant removal, a Nipple Lift can offer an additional aesthetic improvement by correcting any drooping or asymmetry that may have developed over time.

Nipple Revisions can be part of a Nipple Lift or a separate procedure. Nipple Revisions address nipples that are

inverted
overly large
overly prominent
misshapen
flat

NIPPLE LFT & REVISION TECHNIQUE

There are two basic Nipple Lifts

Crescent Lift
Circumareolar or “Donut” Lift

A Crescent Lift or C-lift can raise the nipple-areolar (N-A) complex about 1cm-1.5 cm. This can be done unilaterally (one breast) to improve the symmetry of the nipples if one is lower than the other or bilaterally (both nipples). In a C-lift the surgeon makes an incision over the superior N-A complex in an ellipse which looks like the shape of a crescent moon to remove that skin above the nipple. Sutures are internal and not visible. A Crescent Lift does not lift the underlying tissues of the breast, but it can make them appear to be more lifted. C-lifts often accompany a primary breast augmentation or a breast revision surgery.

A Circumareolar Lift or Donut Lift as it is commonly referred is another type of nipple-areolar lift that addresses lifting the N-A complex 1.5cm-2.5cm. Candidates for this procedure present with one or both nipples that sit lower than desired but have a tight lower breast curve. The breast itself does not need to be lifted. In this procedure the surgeon makes an incision around the entire nipple areolar complex giving it the appearance of a donut shape, which is how it earned the name the “Donut” lift. This incision allows the surgeon to lift the N-A complex up to 2.5cm and minimize any skin bunch or pucker. A Cirumareolar Lift does not lift the underlying tissues of the breast which is why candidates must have a tight lower breast curve to qualify for this procedure. A Circumareolar lift can be performed with a primary breast augmentation or a breast revision surgery.

A Nipple Lift can also include a Nipple Revision surgery if desired. Size, projection, inverted nipples or scars from previous surgeries can be surgically corrected using any number of techniques that your surgeon will discuss with you at the time of your consultation. To reduce the size of nipples, the surgeon removes excess tissue at the tip or base of the nipple, reshaping it to a smaller more proportionate appearance. Nipple projection is addressed by adding or removing tissue for a desirable level of protrusion. Inverted nipples are improved by releasing tethering ducts or fibrous bands that cause the inversion.

CONSULTATION, PREPARATION & PROCEDURE

Your journey toward achieving the desired appearance begins with a detailed consultation. During this initial meeting with an Aesthetics MD surgeon, you’ll discuss your aesthetics goals, medical history, and any questions you may have. Your surgeon will evaluate your breast shape, nipple position, and overall symmetry to determine the best approach for your needs.

Based on your goals and anatomy, your surgeon will recommend the most suitable technique, ensuring results that look natural and harmonious. The surgeon presents Before and After photos to help you to visualize the potential outcome of a Nipple Lift or Revision. A thorough discussion about what to expect, potential risks, and results provides you will all the information needed to make an informed decision.

Preparation is key to ensuring a smooth procedure and recovery process. Our Clinical Coordinator reviews consents, lab work, and post op instructions with you during your scheduled pre-op appointment. For added convenience, many of our pre-op appointments are available by phone. Our Patient Coordinator will discuss this with you at the time of scheduling your surgery.

On the day of your surgery, you will arrive at our boutique surgical facility located next door to our Aesthetics MD offices. There you will be greeted by our amazing and highly skilled OR staff and anesthesiologists. Everyone feels nervous before surgery. Our staff puts you at ease by showing you that you are in the most capable and attentive hands.

Nipple Lifts and Revisions are performed under local or general anesthesia depending on what other surgical procedures are being combined. Your surgeon will review your surgical plan, discuss any last minute questions, and make markings before the procedure begins. Incisions will be closed with absorbable sutures and covered in surgical tape. After recovery, most patients choose to go directly home but after care options are available.

NIPPLE LIFT RECOVERY

After your Nipple Lift you may experience some mild swelling and tenderness, which usually subsides within a few days. Following your surgeon’s aftercare instructions can accelerate the healing process and reduce the risk of any post-operative complications.

During your first post-operative appointment, the nurse or surgeon will review with your instructions and medications. Surgical tape placed over the incisions will remain in place for up to six weeks. This helps heal and minimize scarring. For patients who had a Breast Augmentation or Breast Revision surgery, special surgical garments must be worn for support for several weeks post-operatively.

For two weeks after surgery, no activities that raises your heart rate or blood pressure including physical labor, exercise, walking the dog, sex, or heavy lifting. You may return to light or sedentary work schedules as soon as you discontinue the use of pain medications, and you are feeling up to it. Surgery of any kind requires self-care and patience afterward. It’s important not to rush the healing process for the best results and least number of complications.

WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS?

Understanding the timeline for healing and results can help you set realistic expectations and prepare for each stage of recovery.

Initial Results after Nipple Lift or Revision Surgery

Immediately following your Nipple Lift surgery, you’ll notice a change in position and appearance of your nipples. The nipples will be in their newly elevated position, giving your breasts a more lifted, youthful look. However, initial swelling and bruising are common, which can temporarily mask your final results.

In the first few days after surgery, swelling and minor bruising around the nipples are expected. This initial swelling will gradually subside, allowing the new shape and position of the nipple to become more defined over time.

Within the first two weeks, you’ll start to see a clearer picture of your nipple lift results as swelling continues to reduce. During this period, you may still have some tenderness, but most patients find that discomfort significantly decreases after the first week.

By the one-month mark, the majority of swelling and bruising should be gone, and your Nipple Lift results will be much more noticeable. Scars might still be slightly red or pink but will fade with time. At this stage, you’ll be able to appreciate the enhanced position, symmetry, and balance of your nipples.

FINAL RESULTS

While you’ll see significant improvements within the first few weeks, the full results of your Nipple Lift will typically become apparent within 3-6 months. During this time, any residual swelling will fade, and incisions will continue to heal and refine. Scars will gradually fade and become less visible, revealing the final, natural-looking outcome.
