The Day of Your Procedure
Breast augmentation surgery is performed under general anesthesia at our state-of-the-art AAAA-accredited outpatient facility, conveniently located next to Aesthetics MD.
Before surgery, your surgeon will review your pre-op notes and mark incision points. In surgery the surgeon creates a space beneath the chest muscle to position the implant securely. He places a sizer in the space and sits you upright to check for size and symmetry then places the implant. The procedure typically lasts about 2 hours, and you’ll return home the same day to begin your recovery. You’ll wake up wearing a surgical support bra, with incisions covered in surgical tape.

What to Expect During Breast Augmentation Recovery
Recovering from breast augmentation is a process, but with the right care, you can heal comfortably and enjoy your results. Here’s an overview of what recovery looks like and how we’ll support you along the way.
After surgery, you’ll wear a special surgical bra to support your breasts, reduce swelling, and promote healing. This should be worn for the first 4-6 weeks. Discomfort is normal initially, but advanced pain relief options, like Exparel, can significantly reduce discomfort during the first few days. Antibiotics are prescribed for the first four days to minimize the risk of infection.
Your first follow-up appointment takes place the day after surgery, where your surgeon or the nurse teaches you breast implant exercises to help your implants settle into a natural position. These exercises are simple and can be done at home with video guidance. By weeks 2-3, you’ll transition to a soft support bra for continued healing and comfort.
Most patients are ready to return to light work within 5-7 days. Exercise begins gradually, with light activities resuming at 2 weeks and more strenuous workouts allowed around 4-6 weeks. Swelling and minor bruising are common in the first few weeks but will gradually improve, revealing the natural shape of your breasts as the implants settle.
During recovery, it’s normal to experience a burning sensation in the nipples or temporary numbness in the breast area. These sensations typically resolve within a few months as your nerves adjust. Incision lines will start as pink or red but will fade over the next several months. With proper care, most patients find scars blend well and are easily concealed.
For the first two weeks, all patients are instructed to abstain from strenuous activity that raises heart rate or blood pressure:

- At home, fill nylon baggies with 100 ml (that’s equal to 100cc) of flax seed. Breast implants range in size from 140 up to 800cc. Since not all breasts are of equal size, you may find you need more flax seed baggies in one breast than the other.
- Fill a bra with the nylon baggies until you reach the desired size. Mark down the total number of ml in each breast. These notes will provide a guideline for your in-office sizing.
- Continue to fill your bra until you reach a point that feels too big for your desired outcome.
- You will want to try on a tight shirt like a tank top and a loose top with your stuffed bra to see how it looks in clothes.
- On the day of your pre-op appointment, please bring in your bra, clothes you used for trying on at home, and any notes from your home flax seed exercise that will assist our Clinical Coordinator with helping you determine your ideal size. You do not need to bring in the nylon baggies filled with flax seed.
- Using gel sizers provided by the breast implant manufacturers, you will fill your bra until you reach the desired size. This is where your notes from the home exercise come in handy because they provide a range. The more you narrow your range, the easier your decision becomes.
- The final step is to see how you look and feel in clothes. Sometimes people change their minds about wanting to be bigger or smaller once they see how their new breasts might look in clothes.
It’s important not to get stuck on a number when you are choosing, there is very little difference, for example, between 300cc and 350cc implants. At the pre-op appointment, we outline a range of sizes to achieve the desired look. This is reinforced by the photos you provide showing what you want your breast volume to be.
