CHEMICAL PEELS

Chemical peels have been in use since the days of antiquity, and many different formulations exist to achieve the goal of rejuvenating the skin by means of triggering the skin’s natural peeling mechanism.

The facial treatments work by triggering the body’s natural reaction to a surface burn, similar to the way the skin peels following a sunburn. Most chemical peels use some form of acid to gently burn off the skin’s outermost layer, revealing a fresh new layer of glowing skin beneath.

BENEFITS OF CHEMICAL PEELS

Today, chemical peels are just one more option for rejuvenating the skin by removing dead skin cells, surface impurities, and accumulated debris, and triggering collagen production to expose a fresh, new layer of renewed skin cells.

While most peels are designed for use on the face, you can also use chemical peels on different areas of the body, including the neck, chest, shoulders, back, buttocks, thighs, and hands.

Chemical peels offer numerous benefits for achieving smoother, brighter, and healthier skin:

  • Improved Skin Texture: By removing the damaged outer layers, chemical peels smooth out rough patches and promote smoother skin.
  • Reduction of Age Spots and Sun Damage: Peels can lighten dark spots, age spots, and other signs of sun exposure.
  • Acne and Acne Scar Treatment: Light and medium peels can help reduce acne breakouts and improve the appearance of acne scars.
  • Collagen Production: Peels stimulate collagen production, which helps to firm and plump the skin, creating a youthful appearance.
  • Minimized Pore Size: By exfoliating the outer layer of skin, peels help to reduce pore size and clear clogged pores.

IDEAL CANDIDATES

Chemical peels are customizable to your unique concerns, shedding away the outer layer of damaged skin for a radiant complexion.

The ideal candidate for a chemical peel treatment is someone who experiences skin issues such as sun-damaged skin, acne scarring, uneven pigmentation, or fine lines and wrinkles.

Chemical peels are suitable for a variety of skin types and skin tones, but during your initial consultation, our team of aesthetic experts will determine the best type of peel for your individual needs.

types of chemical peels

There are many types of chemical peels, but most fall into one of three categories.

LIGHT PEELS

These are the type of peels that people often refer to as “lunchtime peels” and are the mildest type of chemical peel available. This type of peel lifts off only the outermost surface layer of skin, and you may experience redness or slight tenderness to the touch for about 20 to 30 minutes after the treatment. Over the course of the next few days, you may experience some mild flaking and peeling, but for the most part, the effects of these peels is not particularly dramatic.

The results can be impressive at producing improved surface tone and texture, a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, and some reduction in pore size and brown spots. For deeper rejuvenation, however, you’d have to go with a more intense type of chemical peel.

MEDIUM PEELS

These chemical peels are the next level up after a light or superficial peel, and generally contain trichloroacetic acid at concentrations of 35 percent or less. Medium-depth peels are effective at treating sun damage, sunspots, mild to moderate acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles, and lax skin and dark circles under the eyes.

Following the application of the acid, the peeling process can take anywhere from five to seven days. During this period, the skin peels similarly to the way it peels after a sunburn. The fresh new skin beneath the surface is raw and red and very vulnerable, requiring constant hydration with ointment and total protection from sun exposure, which means that our Newport Beach Chemical Peel patients may need to stay indoors for a few days during the recovery period.

DEEP PEELS

These deeper peels are used to treat more pronounced and stubborn issues such as severe acne scars, deeper lines, and wrinkles, excessive sun damage, or laxity of the skin. These peels also contain trichloroacetic acid solutions, but in this case, they contain concentrations ranging from 50 to 70 percent, and in some cases, they may contain phenol acid. Deeper chemical peels may not be recommended for patients with darker skin tones, as they could produce scarring or uneven pigmentation in such patients.

Downtime following a deep peel may range from one to two weeks, with an average period of about 10 days. During this time, peeling is intensive and the raw, pink skin beneath the surface must be protected from sun exposure as well as kept hydrated at all times. You will probably have to spend most of the recovery period indoors, but it will be worth the sacrifice once you heal from the peel and expose that lovely layer of glowing, fresh new skin!

CONSULTATION, PREPARATION & PROCEDURE

Before your chemical peel is applied, our specialist will cleanse your skin to remove makeup, cosmetics, and oil, as these surface deposits may act as a barrier that prevents the acid from properly penetrating the skin.

An ointment is applied to the skin around delicate areas such as the eyes, nose, and mouth, to avoid pooling of the acid in those areas. A lip ointment will also be applied to protect the mouth and lips. Following this, the acid is applied gently to the entire face.

The length of time that the acid is left on the skin will depend on the strength and type of peel being applied. If it’s a mild surface peel, the acid will neutralize itself over a period of time, and the patient will be able to simply wash the chemical peel off their skin. In the case of stronger peels, a neutralizing agent is required in order to stop the acid from working after a certain period of time.

The peel works by triggering a chemical reaction in the skin that gently dissolves the outermost layer of dead skin cells. This helps to even out the tone and texture of the skin, and promotes increased production of collagen, which builds plump, voluminous skin cells and healthy, glowing skin.

WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS?

Light Chemical Peel

After a light chemical peel, many patients notice improvements in their skin tone and texture almost immediately. The mild exfoliation process can enhance glow and radiance, giving you a fresher appearance. Although full results may continue to improve over the following weeks as the skin heals and rejuvenates, you can typically expect to see noticeable changes within just a few days.

Medium Chemical Peel

For a medium chemical peel, initial results usually appear within a week as peeling subsides and the skin begins to heal. Over the next few weeks, you’ll likely notice further improvements in terms of reduced pigmentation, smoother texture, and diminished appearance of age spots or acne scars. Total improvement can be seen around 3 to 6 months post-treatment as the new skin continues to regenerate and collagen production increases.

Deep Chemical Peel

With a deep chemical peel, patience is key. The most dramatic results emerge after the significant downtime period when the skin has fully healed, which can take up to 21 days. Patients often witness

chemical peel RECOVERY

The recovery process following a chemical peel varies depending on the depth of the treatment. Whether you’ve undergone a light, medium, or deep chemical peel, understanding the healing process is essential for optimal results and healthy skin recovery.

Light Chemical Peel Recovery

A light peel is the gentlest form of chemical peel, targeting the outer layer of skin. Here’s what you can expect during recovery:

  • Peeling Process: Mild redness and slight peeling of the skin, which typically subsides in 3-5 days.
  • Downtime: Minimal to no downtime. You may resume your normal activities immediately, though sun protection is crucial.
  • Aftercare: Keep your skin moisturized, use a gentle cleanser, and avoid sun exposure. Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen daily to protect your fresh skin.

Medium Chemical Peel Recovery

A medium-depth chemical peel penetrates the middle layer of skin, addressing more significant concerns like sun damage, age spots, and acne scars.

  • Peeling Process: Skin may appear red and swollen for the first few days, followed by noticeable peeling. Full recovery typically takes 7-10 days.
  • Downtime: Moderate downtime is required as the skin heals. You should avoid strenuous activities and limit sun exposure for at least a week.
  • Aftercare: Use cool compresses to reduce discomfort, and follow your provider’s instructions regarding moisturizers and skincare products. Avoid picking at the peeling skin to prevent scarring.

Deep Chemical Peel Recovery

A deep chemical peel is the most intensive type of peel, often used for treating deep wrinkles, severe sun damage, and acne scarring. The recovery process is more extensive:

  • Peeling Process: Significant redness, swelling, and peeling will occur. Skin may take up to 14-21 days to fully heal, with deeper layers of skin regenerating during this time.
  • Downtime: You’ll need to allow for substantial downtime, as the skin will require rest and protection from the elements. Avoid sun exposure and strenuous activities.
  • Aftercare: Follow a strict aftercare routine prescribed by your provider, including the use of high-quality sunscreen, moisturizers, and gentle cleansers. Avoid direct sunlight, extreme heat, and swimming pools during recovery to protect your healing skin
