Laser resurfacing treatments are best suited for light to medium skin types I – III on the Fitzpatrick Scale.
Ideal candidates present with signs of aging skin including fine lines, deep wrinkles, sun damage, acne scars, skin pigmentation, irregular or uneven skin texture, and uneven skin tone. CONSULTATION, PREPARATION & PROCEDURE
Before treatment, you will meet with one of our Aesthetics MD nurses to determine if you are a candidate. During your skincare consultation, your beauty concerns will be addressed along with other considerations such as budget, available recovery time, lifestyle, plus long and short-term aesthetic goals.
On the day of your procedure, arrive at our Newport Beach office with a clean face and wearing comfortable clothes. You may want to change into one of our dressing gowns. Hydrate the day before and the morning of with lots of water. For added hydration, we suggest electrolytes to add to the water. Avoid caffeine and sugar the morning of your procedure.
CO2 laser rejuvenation treatments are considered non-surgical and can be done in the office with a topical numbing cream and nitrous gas for added comfort. The treatment takes from 30 minutes to one hour, and patients can drive themselves home afterward. You may feel a slight snap and heat as the laser contacts the skin and reaches the deeper layers. Most patients are quite comfortable with just numbing cream, but others find the nitrous gas necessary. Some patients bring along a pair of earbuds to listen to relaxing music and drown out the beeping sound the machine makes as it fires.
A Zimmer cooler is on hand if needed for additional comfort. Our Newport Beach Fractionated CO2 Laser patients opting for the Nitrous gas will be able to drive themselves home after waiting an appropriate amount of time after the treatment is completed. Note: Patients with a history of cold sores will be proactively treated pre- and postoperatively with prescription medication.

CO2 LASER RECOVERY
Immediately after treatment, the skin feels hot. This subsides in a few hours. The treated area is moderately to significantly red immediately following treatment and can remain red for up to 7 days post-treatment.
Moderate to significant swelling is typical and usually subsides within 3-10 days. Cold towels dipped in a vinegar and water solution calm the skin and relieve any discomfort. There is no need for any type of pain medication after treatment. Skin can be dry and after several days may flake and slough.
Do not pick at your skin, rub or scrub it. This can lead to discoloration and interfere with the healing process. It is important to hydrate the skin so that it does not scab or crack. If it does scab, do not pick! Aquaphor is an inexpensive topical ointment that provides and locks moisture into the skin. Skin will feel and look tight. Most patients avoid social engagements for about one week after a laser skin resurfacing. The sun must be avoided during the healing process.
There is minimal downtime. After the skin re-epithelizes and new healthy skin has formed, for 5-7 days, it is safe to apply sunscreen and makeup. Drink lots of water during the healing cycle, avoid alcohol, and limit caffeine and rigorous exercise.
WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS?
Seven to ten days after the treatment you begin to see results. The new skin that has formed is still a little pink and can get redder with exertion like exercise. It’s not uncommon to have little flushes of heat that pass quickly. Your skin will be noticeably softer and glowing, with fewer wrinkles, fine lines disappearing, skin tone more even, and your skin even feel tighter after the regeneration process.
Though some practitioners claim laser treatments lift and tighten the skin, the effect is generally short-lived.
