“RHINOPLASTY OR A ‘NOSE JOB’ IS A POPULAR PROCEDURE FOR MEN AND WOMEN OF ALL AGES. NOSES ARE CENTRALLY IMPORTANT TO BOTH THE AESTHETIC BALANCE OF THE FACE AND THE FUNCTIONAL BALANCE OF LIFE.”

– DR. MARK ANTON

RHINOPLASTY BEFORE & AFTERS

ABOUT RHINOPLASTY

Rhinoplasty can be for functional or cosmetic reasons. A functional rhinoplasty addresses breathing issues and may or may not include any cosmetic changes. A cosmetic rhinoplasty alters the size, shape, width, inclination, prominence, or any specific feature of the nose, like the size or shape of the nostrils. Either one can have a significant positive impact on the patient’s life.

An expert board-certified plastic surgeon with extensive experience in facial plastic surgery procedures can achieve a striking transformation in a patient’s face by performing a rhinoplasty procedure. Additionally, a surgeon with advanced training in facial procedures such as Dr. Anton who completed a Facial Fellowship, provides the patient with the highest level of expertise and experience.

Most rhinoplasty procedures are performed under general anesthesia in an outpatient surgery facility and patients go home the same day after surgery. Occasionally, a nose procedure is performed under local anesthetic. If performed under general anesthesia, you’ll be sleeping during the procedure. If performed with local anesthesia, your nose will be numbed with a topical analgesic and you will be sedated to prevent any discomfort during the process.

CLOSED VS. OPEN RHINOPLASTY

There are two common types of nose jobs: closed and open rhinoplasty. A closed rhinoplasty is more common and is considered a “scarless” surgery because it does not require any incisions on the outside of the nose. This approach is mainly used for noses that have more symmetry but with a bump, bulbous tip, or other concern.

Open rhinoplasty is required if a nose is large, if the nasal tip (underlying cartilage) is distorted or in some cases when the patient has had a previous nose job and desires a revision. An open rhinoplasty requires an incision along the base of the nose. Sutures are camouflaged within the natural creases of the nose. With both open and closed rhinoplasties, various techniques are applied to reshape the nose to a more desirable aesthetic. Since every nose is unique, Dr. Anton will discuss in detail the surgical plan that is best to achieve your desired natural result.

BENEFITS OF RHINOPLASTY

Not everyone is born with a nose they like. For some people they can spend their entire life hating their nose and feeling insecure about how it makes them appear. On top of that, they can also have difficulty breathing or suffer from constant sinus infections.

Rhinoplasty is performed for reasons beyond cosmetic improvements. In many cases, rhinoplasty procedures also correct respiratory conditions and restore a patient’s ability to breathe freely, improving their sleep and overall health as well as their quality of life.

One of the biggest benefits of a rhinoplasty is an improved self-image. So many of our patients report an overwhelming sense of confidence after surgery. It’s human nature to want to look and feel your best and rhinoplasty can be life altering for many.

It’s not that people seeking rhinoplasty want to look like someone else. They just want to optimize their own beauty. If your nose has an unsightly bump on its bridge, or a past injury left you with a crooked nose, this may be the first thing people notice when they look at your face. Natural results, like the kind Dr. Anton produces with rhinoplasty surgery, allows patients to retain what makes them uniquely beautiful and also create aesthetic balance in their face.

Whether it’s due to genetic or other reasons, if your nose is somehow out of sync with the rest of your face, rhinoplasty may be the ideal solution for you. Rhinoplasty, known colloquially as a nose job, can bring your nose into proper proportion with the rest of your other facial features, improving your entire facial appearance.

Rhinoplasty can improve the functional and aesthetic qualities of a nose by addressing:

  • Breathing issues
  • Large nose
  • Bulbous tip
  • Bump
  • Hook nose
  • Wide bridge
  • Large nostrils
  • Tip position

CONSULTATION, PREPARATION & PROCEDURE

The first step you’ll need to take is to schedule an appointment with Dr. Anton so that he may evaluate your condition, and examine the structures of your nose, as well as its proportion to your other facial features.

During your consultation for a rhinoplasty, Newport Beach plastic surgeon, Dr. Anton will address what bothers you about your nose and your desired outcome regarding size and shape. He will take photos of you then provide computer images of the modifications and changes surgery can make to improve the look of your nose.

The consult process is vital to the patient understanding his or her options and setting realistic expectations. Dr. Anton will show you photographs of patients who have had similar procedures to yours with similar anatomy to yours so that you can get a realistic picture of what to expect. He will also assess your health and discuss such topics as risks and recovery time, as well as post-surgical care.

Prior to surgery, patients may be asked to provide photos of the ideal nose they are envisioning. As this is an individual process, it provides the doctor with an understanding of what each patient has in mind. You should also prepare in advance for the brief recovery period that you’ll need following your surgery to heal and recover properly, including taking a few days off work to rest fully.

RHINOPLASTY RECOVERY

Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia at an accredited surgery facility using Board Certified Anesthesiologists. The procedure often takes about two hours, however, the operating time depends on the extent of surgery.

Now, most people have this idea that a nose job hurts but Dr. Anton’s rhinoplasty patients are pleasantly surprised to find that they experience only mild to moderate pain that is easily managed with pain medication and proper rest and recovery. This is mostly related to his techniques that minimize bruising.

Most patients wake from surgery feeling groggy, and fatigued and simply want to sleep. Bruising and swelling around the eye and nasal areas with a small amount of bleeding and stuffiness in the nose are to be expected. In most cases, an internal splint is left in place for up to 7 days to stabilize the surgical changes. An exterior splint may also be placed across the bridge of the nose for up to 14 days post surgically. In the case of an open rhinoplasty you will have stitches at the base of the nose that will be removed in around 5 to 7 days’ time frame.

POST-PROCEDURE

After surgery, you will go home to rest and recover. All patients will wear an external splint and some will have an internal splint if internal breathing work is done. Internal splints look like straws with an opening on each end making it easy and comfortable to breathe. As with any surgery, it is important to honor the body’s healing time and follow the post-operative instructions explained and given to you during your pre-operative appointment one month prior to surgery. The most important post-operative instruction is nothing to raise your heart rate or blood pressure for 2 weeks after surgery.

Internal and external splints are removed one week after surgery and this is not painful. Most swelling and bruising subsides after two weeks. Mild nasal tip swelling can continue up to a year after surgery as the tissues continue to remold and reshape into their optimal result. Post-operative dryness can be relieved with saline spray and ointment per doctor’s instructions. Patients who had the bridge of their nose broken will not be allowed to wear glasses for six weeks after surgery.

For the first two weeks all patients are instructed to abstain from any activity that raises heart rate or blood pressure:

  • Exercise
  • Sex
  • Bending
  • Lifting
  • Straining
  • Stress & Anxiety
  • Drinking Alcohol
  • Smoking

Overall, most of the bruising and swelling will subside in about two weeks. Residual minimal swelling can take up to 6 months. You will be advised during your post-operative appointments about these restrictions. The healing process varies from patient to patient and is decided on an individual basis.

WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS?

Immediately after rhinoplasty, patients can expect to see some changes in the shape and structure of their nose, though these will be obscured by swelling and bruising. Initial swelling may be significant, and bruising around the eyes is common. Despite this, many patients notice an improvement in the nasal shape soon after the procedure.

FINAL RESULTS

The final results of rhinoplasty can be appreciated after about 6 months, once all the residual swelling has resolved, but improvements can continue up to a year. Patients can expect a nose that is more harmonious with their facial features and an overall improved facial balance. For those undergoing functional rhinoplasty, improvements in breathing will be noticeable much earlier, often within the first few weeks post-surgery.

frequently asked questions

Is rhinoplasty a safe procedure?
Is rhinoplasty a safe procedure?

Yes, rhinoplasty is a safe procedure. In the hands of a skilled doctor like Dr. Anton and our surgical artists at Aesthetics MD, complications are rare. During your consultation, your medical history will be reviewed ensuring the procedure is suitable and allergic reactions to anesthesia won’t occur.

How long do results last?

Results from rhinoplasty are long-lasting. The changes made during the surgery are permanent, which means that once the desired shape and structure of the nose are achieved, they will remain that way for many years to come.

However, it’s important to keep in mind that while the surgical results are permanent, the nose’s appearance can still be affected by factors such as aging, injury, or weight fluctuations.

When will I see final results?

When it comes to rhinoplasty, patience is key. While the initial results of the procedure can be seen soon after the surgery, it is important to understand that the final results will take some time to fully manifest.

During the healing process, it is normal for the nose to go through various stages. Initially, it may appear swollen and slightly distorted. This is completely normal and part of the healing process. Over time, as the swelling subsides and the tissues settle, the nose will gradually take on its final, defined shape – taking a year in some cases.

Everyone’s healing process is unique. Some individuals may see their final results sooner than others. The rate at which swelling resolves can vary depending on factors such as the complexity of the procedure, individual healing abilities, and adherence to post-operative care instructions.

How long is rhinoplasty surgery?

Surgery time can vary depending on which techniques are used during your rhinoplasty. A primary rhinoplasty will often take 1.5 – 3 hours. A secondary rhinoplasty or surgical reconstruction can take three times the length due to the added complexity.

How much does rhinoplasty surgery cost?
How much does rhinoplasty surgery cost?

The costs of rhinoplasty operations vary widely by patient, depending on the techniques used during the procedure. A revision rhinoplasty procedure, which is additional surgery to correct past procedures, may incur more costs due to the added complexity.

Autologous cartilage may also be harvested from the rib cage or septal cartilage to provide additional structure and support to the nose, commonly used in Asian noses.

Every nose is unique and there are a range of techniques used to correct the nasal framework. In the case of minor adjustment, a liquid rhinoplasty may be a suitable option for you, however, it is a temporary alternative.

What are potential risks and complications?

Like any surgical procedure, rhinoplasty comes with its own set of risks and potential complications. Patients need to be well-informed and aware of these potential risks before undergoing the procedure.

Some risks include infection, bleeding, nasal obstruction, and altered sensation. In the hands of an experienced surgeon, these complications are highly unlikely.

Will there be any visible scars?

In the case of closed rhinoplasty, there will be no visible scars as the incisions are placed in the nostrils. During an open procedure, the incision will be strategically shaped to camouflage any scar tissue. Patients often find these scars are virtually invisible, drawing no attention to the surgery itself.

Is rhinoplasty covered by insurance?

If you have health insurance, ask your insurance carrier in advance if all or any portion of the procedure may be covered so that you can prepare in advance for the expense. Health insurance typically does not cover rhinoplasty procedures that are performed for purely cosmetic reasons; however, it may cover part or all the expenses for a procedure performed to correct a respiratory condition.
