Start planning and preparing for your recovery BEFORE your surgery. Proper recovery from a tummy tuck is almost as important to optimizing your results and ensuring your safety as is the procedure itself.

Using a single internal suture can result in a lot of post-operative pain as all the tension is concentrated in one location along the midline. The Triple Tummy Tuck uses three internal sutures to tighten the fascia wall, one down the midline and two on either side. This technique displaces the tension across three locations, which dramatically reduces post-operative pain and recovery time. It also draws the waist in tighter and makes it smaller. Externally, the excess abdominal skin is removed with either a modified or full abdominoplasty procedure. In both procedures, the surgeon places an incision around the belly button to release the skin, which is then pulled down like a window shade. A full triple tummy tuck candidate has enough excess skin that the hole from the opening around the old belly button can be pulled down low enough to be excised along the lower abdominal scar.
Generally, a full tummy tuck scar runs along the lowest part of the abdomen horizontally from hip to hip. The length of the scar depends on the amount of skin removed. Extreme weight loss patients will often require more skin to be removed and a scar that travels beyond the hip bone and follows the curve of the body. Regardless of the length, the full tummy tuck incision is placed so that it is strategically concealed below a bathing suit or undergarments and heals with minimal visibility.
A modified triple tummy tuck applies to patients that do not have enough excess skin to be pulled down low enough and removed through the lower abdominal incision. In a modified tummy tuck after the belly button is released and the skin lifted away, a new belly button opening is created. The old opening can be either closed with a vertical scar or excised by raising the lower abdominal incision up.
