The Breast Lift procedure is performed to achieve a tighter and better overall shape and appearance of the breasts. Depending on personal preference and desired result, a Breast Augmentation may be combined with this procedure.
— Dr. Mark Anton, Newport Beach Plastic Surgeon
A breast lift procedure takes approximately 3-4 hours under general anesthesia. The length of the surgery depends on current breast size and if implants are used.
All sutures are internal; there are no external sutures. The incision is placed around the areola and runs vertically from the bottom of the areola down the center of the breast. In some cases, an additional incision underneath the breast crease is needed in order to achieve an optimal result. Some of our Newport Beach breast lift patients also want to change the size and/or shape of their areolas, which can be done at this time. Most commonly, a good candidate for this procedure has one or more of the following concerns:
Newport Beach Plastic Surgery
Many women desire more youthful-looking breasts. The most common complaint is breasts that are sagging and not perky. Other complaints include:
A breast lift can be performed at any age; however, it is recommended that women wait until breasts are fully developed, a stable weight is achieved, and no future pregnancies are planned. Women who are breastfeeding need to wait three months after having stopped before having a breast lift. Pregnancy and breast-feeding may have significant and unpredictable effects on the size and shape of your breasts.
During your one-hour consultation with Dr. Anton, he will discuss your desired breast shape and size to determine which type of lift is best for you. You should mention anything else about your breasts that you would like to see improved. This will help Dr. Anton to understand your expectations and determine whether those expectations can be met. Very often our Newport Beach breast lift patients opt for a breast augmentation with their lift or in the case of breast revision, an implant exchange.
Dr. Anton recommends a baseline mammogram for all his breast patients, regardless of age, but particularly if you have a history of breast cancer in your family. Details of the mammogram are discussed in your pre-op appointment prior to surgery. A mammogram will help to detect any future changes in your breast tissue. Following a breast lift in Newport Beach, you will still be able to perform self-breast examinations. Breast lift surgery will not increase your risk of developing breast cancer.
Breastfeeding is also a consideration. Since the milk ducts and nipples are left intact, breast lift surgery will not typically affect your ability to breastfeed, however, some women might have difficulties producing enough milk. If you have concerns about breastfeeding after a breast lift surgery, you should discuss this with Dr. Anton during your consultation.
There are two types of lifts – 1. Full Breast Lift 2. Nipple Areolar “Lift” or repositioning. These can be separate procedures or combined as in the case of a full breast lift depending on the anatomy of the breast, the degree of ptosis (sagging) and the patient’s desired outcome.
For our Newport Beach Breast Revision patients with implants, Dr. Anton adds yet another layer to his breast lift by using the implant scar capsule. He tightens and sutures the capsule into place adding greater integrity to the shape and firmness of the breast.
Newport Beach Breast Lift Procedure
The most common procedure Dr. Anton performs is a Full Breast Lift which lifts and tightens the Nipple Areolar N/A) Complex along with the lower breast pole. Depending on the degree of ptosis (> ~10 cm) of the lower breast pole, Dr. Anton performs either a Lollipop incision or an Anchor incision.
Lollipop – the incision encircles the N/A complex and follows the vertical curve of the breast to the lower breast fold.
Anchor – this incision encircles the N/A complex, follows the vertical curve of the breast down to the breast fold then continues horizontally under the breast fold along the inframammary fold (IMF). The length of the horizontal IMF scar depends on the amount of tissue that needs to be removed to achieve the patient’s desired and most natural appearance.
Internally, Dr. Anton creates a dermal sling that acts as a support bra to hold the tissues in place. He achieves this by tightening and suturing the dermis (the thick layer of living tissue below the epidermis). The thickness and integrity of the dermis allow it to hold the breast shape which further supports the external lifting of the skin.
Dr. Anton’s signature Layered Breast Lift is a surgical technique that creates both an internal (dermal) and external (skin) lift with Nipple Areolar Complex repositioning. For his Newport Beach breast revision patients he can add another layer of a capsular lift, using the existing implant capsule to create an internal sling.
Dr. Anton does not use drains in his breast lift procedures. He opposes the use of drains as they are a vehicle for bacteria to enter the body and this can lead to post-operative complications like scarring and infection. Instead, Dr. Anton cauterizes blood vessels and creates tiny blood clots to mimic the body’s own natural healing response. The body forms its own blood clots within 7-10 days of surgery.

The other type of breast lift is an N/A Complex lift that addresses the position of the areola (nipple). Women with tight lower breast poles but low nipples are candidates and can achieve a more desirable nipple position through one of two techniques:
Crescent Lift and the Circumareolar Lift. Very few patients complaining of breast ptosis (sagging) are candidates for an N/A Complex lift most often the lower breast curve also needs to be tightened to achieve the desired and most natural appearance.
All breast lift scars heal especially well due to the nature of the tissue and the direction of the incisions. Typically, scars are fully healed and barely visible between 12-18 months postoperatively depending on the individual.
Dr. Anton is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, Castle Connolly Top Doctor and completed a Breast Fellowship before starting his practice in Newport Beach, California.
Dr. Anton along with Dr. Hartrampf, father of the modern-day breast reconstruction, created the Star Flap Nipple Reconstruction, which is still considered the most popular and widely used technique in nipple and breast reconstruction surgery today.
Additionally, Dr. Anton was one of thirty-five physicians across the country to participate in a 10-year study to determine the safety of silicone implants.
His findings, along with those of his colleagues were reported to the U.S. Institutional Review Board, which in 1997 determined silicone implants to be safe to women’s health.
Today, Dr. Anton continues to be on the cutting edge of breast implant safety. He remains confident that smooth silicone gel implants are safe and do not pose any additional risk to women's health. As Dr. Anton explains to his patients, silicone is used in all kinds of medical devices including cheek and chin implants, joint replacements, contraceptive diaphragms, shunts, pumps, and other various medical devices.

Each year thousands of women undergo successful breast lift surgery, experience no major problems and are pleased with the results. Significant complications from a breast lift are infrequent; however, make sure you understand what surgery involves, including possible risks, complications and follow-up care.
Pre-operative lab work is required to ensure that you are a healthy candidate for general anesthesia and surgery. As with any surgery, there are always risks involved. During your consultation, Dr. Anton will discuss the specific risks and answer any questions you may have including revisions.
Rarely, revisionary surgery may be required. Dr. Anton has a less than 1% revision rate on all surgeries. As with any procedure, the individual’s health, genetics, and lifestyle play a significant role in the overall result of a breast lift. Most patients wake from surgery feeling groggy, tired and just wanting to rest. You will be wrapped in a compression bandage and you may feel some mild to moderate pain that is usually alleviated by prescribed pain medication.
Overall, patients feel their surgery was less painful than anticipated and are able to discontinue their pain medication after 4 to 5 days. It is typical for your breasts to feel very tight immediately after surgery. This will gradually subside during the healing process. Within one to two weeks later your implants should relax into their proper position and move freely. This process can take longer in some patients.
Most of our Newport Beach breast lift patients return to light sedentary work 4 to 5 days after surgery. Your activities will be restricted for a full two-week period including no lifting, bending or straining of any kind. You will be advised during your post-operative appointments regarding these restrictions. The healing process varies from patient to patient, and the activity level is decided on an individual basis.
The breast lift procedure will leave some scarring along the incision sites. In general, all breast lift scars heal especially well due to the nature of the tissue and the direction of the incisions. Typically, scars are fully healed and barely visible between 12-18 months postoperatively depending on the individual. Scarring is usually more extensive in smokers.
The results from a breast lift should be long-lasting. Once corrected, the breasts should remain relatively stable, assuming the patient’s weight does not fluctuate greatly. Maintaining a stable, healthy weight can help you retain your results. Over time skin inelasticity due to aging and gravity may make another procedure necessary to retain the desired results.
