Blepharoplasty

“Eyes tell our story. They can share what we are feeling and thinking without ever saying a word.”

Blepharoplasty BEFORE & AFTERS

ABOUT Blepharoplasty

Our eyes can give away our age or make us appear older than we really are. Drooping eyelids occur in men and women for various reasons. In some cases, the structure of the facial profile falling position of the brow, or the way fat develops around the face can cause this to occur – both of which can be addressed with blepharoplasty.

Simply put, blepharoplasty is the medical term for eyelid surgery. The cosmetic procedure creates more youthful and attractive eyes or augments the shape of the eye. However, for some people, their vision can be impaired by droopy eyelids, in which case blepharoplasty has medical applications.

Commonly known as eyelid surgery, the cosmetic procedure addresses these concerns by removing excess skin, fat, and muscle from the upper and lower eyelids. This surgical technique rejuvenates the eyes, making you look more alert, youthful, and refreshed.

The skin around the eyes is incredibly delicate and prone to showing signs of aging earlier than other areas of the face. Whether you are dealing with droopy upper eyelids that impair your vision or puffy bags under your eyes, blepharoplasty can provide long-lasting, dramatic results.

BLEPHAROPLASTY TECHNIQUES

Blepharoplasty can be performed on your upper eyelid skin, lower eyelid, or both. Also called an eye lift, blepharoplasty removes excess skin from the upper eyelids and reduces bagginess from the lower eyelids.

Upper eyelid surgery is often performed to correct naturally uneven or drooping eyelids, known as ptosis surgery. By carefully removing excess skin, fatty deposits, and repositioning the eye muscle in some cases, an upper blepharoplasty restores harmony and balance to the face, illuminating an expression that better reflects your inner vitality and alertness.

Blepharoplasty procedures are done within millimeters of precision, requiring only the most skilled artists to deliver remarkable improvements. As an eyelid-specific surgical procedure, blepharoplasty is ideal for awakening your gaze, however, it does not get rid of dark circles under your eyes, crow’s feet, or facial wrinkles.

BENEFITS OF BLEPHAROPLASTY

In the hands of the gifted facial plastic surgeons at Aesthetics MD, lower and upper lid blepharoplasty can be life-changing – physically, medically, and emotionally.

The main benefit of blepharoplasty patients is the dramatic improvement in the liveliness of the eyes. By removing excess skin, fat, and muscle, blepharoplasty can help create a more youthful and refreshed look. The procedure can eliminate sagging or drooping eyelids, giving the eyes a more alert and awake appearance.

Beyond cosmetic concerns, excessive skin or fat around the eyelids can obstruct peripheral vision or cause blurred vision, whether due to facial aging or natural anatomy, causing the need for an eyelid lift. Blepharoplasty offers a lasting correction by removing the excess tissue, allowing for clearer and unobstructed vision. This improvement in vision can significantly impact daily activities such as reading, driving, or performing tasks requiring good eyesight.

The results of blepharoplasty are long-lasting, holding up for at least 5-7 years for upper eyelid blepharoplasty and permanently for lower eyelids. The effects of cosmetic eyelid surgery can be seen for many years, making it a worthwhile investment for those seeking a permanent solution to their eyelid concerns.

A blepharoplasty is perfect for patients looking to address the following facial concerns:

  • Sagging upper eyelid contour
  • Impaired field of vision or blurry vision
  • Fatty deposits that produce eyelid puffiness
  • Prominent undereye bags
  • Lower eyelids that droop that reveal below the iris
  • Lower eyelid wrinkles and excess skin
  • Drooping or uneven upper eyelids (ptosis repair)

IDEAL CANDIDATES

Blepharoplasty creates a life-changing impact, physically & emotionally.

As we age, the skin around the eyes can lose its elasticity, leading to sagging, drooping, and the formation of bags. Ideal candidates often have excess skin that hangs over the natural crease of the upper eyelid, creating a tired or aged appearance.

Nearly everyone with a suitable medical history can be candidate for blepharoplasty if they wish to augment their eyelids for medical or cosmetic reasons. Our board-certified plastic surgeons will perform a thorough assessment of your goals and anatomy to determine if this cosmetic surgery is right for you.

CONSULTATION, PREPARATION & PROCEDURE

It is ideal to plan your blepharoplasty approximately eight weeks or more before an important event like a wedding, holiday, or reunion – the more time the better. Almost all bruising and swelling subsides within 2-3 weeks.

During your consultation for Blepharoplasty, your Newport Beach plastic surgeon will evaluate your areas of concern and recommend the best surgical approach and treatment options.

This step is extremely important, as it will allow your surgeon to perform a medical exam and review any relevant health history that may affect your ability to safely undergo this cosmetic surgery and ensure your physical health.

Blepharoplasty is usually performed under general anesthesia in an accredited outpatient facility and takes about 2 hours for the upper and lower eyelids. This can also be performed with local anesthesia and sedation.

Incisions are strategically placed along the crease of the upper eyelid and along the lash line on the lower eyelids, so they are well hidden. Excess skin and fat will be carefully removed, and the underlying muscles may be adjusted to achieve a smoother, more youthful contour.

Sutures are removed 7 days after surgery. Once the incisions have healed, scars are virtually invisible.

BLEPHAROPLASTY RECOVERY

Most patients wake from their blepharoplasty feeling tired and groggy. Slight bruising and swelling will occur immediately after surgery and gradually subside throughout the healing process. It is normal for the eyes to feel tight.

Patients find eyelid surgery to be one of the least painful surgeries, and any mild discomfort and minimal pain are easily managed with prescription medications. Most patients feel their eyelid surgery was less painful than anticipated and may discontinue their pain medication after 4 to 5 days if needed.

As with any surgery, a patient should not do anything that might increase one’s blood pressure in the first 2-3 weeks postoperatively, as that can increase the odds of creating a postoperative hematoma. Hematomas (collection of blood that often requires drainage) are never desirable. Exercise may resume after three to four weeks with the doctor’s approval.

Most Newport Beach blepharoplasty patients return to work within 7-10 days after surgery. Camouflage makeup can be worn under the eyes to disguise bruising the day after surgery so long as the incision lines are avoided until after the sutures are removed. Women may apply eyeliner and eyeshadow once the sutures have been removed and healed, generally 7-10 days after surgery.

Like any surgery, blepharoplasty creates scars. But highly skilled surgeons such as Dr. Anton and our surgeons at Aesthetics MD are masters at placing and hiding blepharoplasty scars in natural skin folds, to the point that scars are virtually invisible.

But remember, it is important to properly care for your surgical incision sites to promote optimal healing. You will play a big part in reducing your scarring.

Blepharoplasty scar reduction regimen often includes:

  • The proper use of anti-bruising medications and antibiotics
  • Appropriately prescribed post-surgical application of ice
  • Use of the most advanced scar creams, prescribed by your doctor

Since damaging UV rays can deepen the pigmentation of scars, you must use high-SPF sunscreen daily and diligently.

Overall, most of the bruising and swelling will subside in about two weeks. Residual minimal swelling can take 3-6 months. You will be advised during your post-operative appointments about these restrictions. The healing process varies from patient to patient and is decided on an individual basis.

WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS?

The results of blepharoplasty are typically not immediately visible due to post-operative swelling and bruising. However, most patients can expect to see a noticeable improvement in the appearance of their eyelids within two weeks as the bruising and swelling subside.

While the majority of swelling resolves within this timeframe, it is important to note that some residual minimal swelling may persist for up to three to six months. Each individual’s healing process is unique, and your surgeon will provide specific guidelines and restrictions during your post-operative appointments.

FINAL RESULTS

As the weeks pass, you will gradually notice the improvements in your eyelid appearance. The excess skin will be removed, the eyelids will appear firmer and more youthful, and any sagging or puffiness will be significantly reduced. The final results of blepharoplasty can be long-lasting, giving you a refreshed and rejuvenated appearance.
